The Best In My Book!
I have ready many user reviews and some technical reviews on the Norelco Arcitec and it has brought me to three conclusions: 1) You can't please everyone but you CAN please most 2) Some of the reviews must have been written by the competition and 3) A little more attention to detail will help some of you understand the product better.

I have been mostly a blade man for about 25 years, having only made a few brief attempts at using an electric. For the past several years, I have been using the Gillette Mach 3 and now the Fusion razors. They are the best blades ever, give a quick close shave and cost so much money to replace ($28.99 msrp for 8 blades), that if I changed them out when I really should (weekly is ideal and almost necessary they go dull so fast), I will have paid for the Norelco Arcitec 1050 plus a little extra, in just one year of use.

Summary: Remington departs from their typical design and incorporates elements from Panasonic and Braun shavers. Decent shave but the build quality remains suspect, making this a bit of a risky purchase compared to similar Braun and Panasonic models.

Full review: I have a soft spot for Remington shavers. It's the brand I started with many years ago, and I always appreciated their `skip the flash and concentrate on value' designs.

What soured me on Remington was their steady decline in quality. For the past few years they cheapened their designs to the point where their shavers rarely lasted longer than a year before failing in one of two ways: either a plastic hinge/attachment/clip broke, or the battery failed to retain a charge (and sometimes both). Yes, they made it easy to get the shaver replaced under warranty, but after repeated replacements, I just gave up on the brand.

Gets the job done... loud.
I got this as a gift to replace a broken Remington MS3-2700. I would say that this MS-5100 does as good of a job as my old shaver, and so far has been more durable. The pop up Trimmer is conveniently located, and good for straightening sideburns.

A few things though: This shaver is very loud right out of the box, much louder than my MS3-2700. Loud, as in, if you live in an apartment, your neighbors will probably be able to hear when you are shaving.

The Pop-Up Mini Foil is mostly useless. When extended it is terribly flimsy and I feel that any pressure on my face will cause the foil to snap off. This flimsiness also causes the vibrations to double the loudness of the shaver. I never use the Mini Foil.

The replacement foils, as is with most electric shavers, are expensive. The manual suggests changing them every 6 months, but, with proper care and frequent rotation, I push that to 12-28 months.

I have a Braun Series 1 150 razor which I really liked. (I've been a Braun user for many years, by the way.) The foil and cutter bar were overdue for replacement, so I was able to get them on Amazon. I do not feel that they are quite the equal of the original foil and cutter, although they look exactly the same. They do not give a comfortable shave, but pull a lot more than the original (or any previously owned Braun razors). Perhaps it needs "breaking in", but I still rate it only "okay" since I've never had to break in a Braun razor before.

It was not clear how I would get new replacement reservoirs for the conditioner. I actually got them with the new shaving heads, but I had to find that out by trial and error. Previously, it came with the conditioner.

The conditioner formulation appears to have changed. It does not lubricate as well and more is required to get the same shaving result.

It is still the best shaving system for me but a little more information for the user would help both of my concerns.

Hard to replace, but worth it
The shaver design is somewhat over complicated I thought. One has to be very careful. However there are a couple of good sites that give you the instructions on how to do it. I bought these batteries, replacing the old ones. It was a bit tricky. You need to be really good with the soldering iron. But it worked out and I am happy I did it. I just hope I won't have to bother again for another few years.

Surprisingly Excellent
I was most pleasantly surprised by this razor after my first shave! I've tried electric razors off and on over the last 20 years or so and never did they even come close to a non-electric razor shave as far as closeness and comfort. This was my first epilator and I went with this one because of the price, just in case I hated it. I dove right in and started with my bikini area. Of course its not comfortable but I think its WAY easier and feels better than waxing. There is no way I could wax myself. My legs need to get a little more furry before it'll work on them but I did run it up my calf and felt a few hairs get pulled. Overall, I'm pleased with this product and over time and with a bit more practice, I may invest in a cordless, wet/ dry epilator.

things I don't like:
Some of these shavers are sold with an edger as a bonus, others aren't but they both cost the same.
works great on stubble, but anything beyond a 5 o'clock shadow you can forget about it.
Vibrates like crazy
Foil is a bit flimsy for a person thats heavy handed
plastic pieces are a bit thin and can break
in some cases the charger input can stop working
If you open the unit the backside of the lever that turns the shaver on has a metal claw that touches a metal board which turns the vibration on. If you push on the lever from the opposite side too hard the claw can collapse causing your shaver not to work as strong because the contact of the claw to the board is compromised.

Cheapened-out
I've been a Remington man all my life (mid-30s) and am only on my third Remington razor--one of them because I dropped and broke it. They're the only thing that could shave my thick facial hair. Replacement cutters have always been great, had to start buying them from Amazon when stores stopped carrying them. Always had great luck.

Until they copped out on the latest design. They "narrowed" the cutters by a blade on each side so it now takes much longer to shave, also the plastic saddle the blades sit in is reduces, and instead of a curved metal blade design they're now tiny washers pressed onto a couple metal rods held by a tiny plastic piece. Very disappointing, doesn't work well, takes longer to shave, don't expect the quality to last long.

May be time to consider the Braun my gal keeps telling me about. Apparently an executive decision by Remington. Poor job on the latest design.

Poor excuse for shaving
Hoping to save money on pricey razor blades, I took a chance on this Conair shaver. I was dutiful in using only it on my legs for three weeks.

Here's what happened:

Poor shave. Didn't go to the skin, so I constantly had stubbly legs. I'd go over and over and over areas, at different angles, in an attempt to catch the strays. I don't think the head ever went all the way to the blades. I tried a variety of methods: different pressure, different way of holding the shaver, different shave creams (Conair nixes gels), dry (both after a shower, so the hair was softer and just on the fly), pivoting and locked head.

Nothing made a difference.

What DID make a difference was the hair on my legs began to become ingrown. I have scabs where the hair was yanked out. My legs itch constantly as a result.

I'm back to blades.
